A More Compassionate Conversation About Metabolism
GLP-1 medications are everywhere right now. They appear in headlines, social media conversations, and increasingly, in patient visits.
What I notice most is not just curiosity, but confusion. Many people are unsure what these medications actually do, how they work in the body, or whether using them means they are taking an easy way out. There is often shame woven into the conversation, and I want to be clear from the beginning, shame does not belong here.
Struggling with weight, energy, cravings, inflammation, or blood sugar regulation is not a character flaw. In many cases, it is the body signaling dysregulation and asking for support.
What GLP-1s Actually Are
GLP-1 stands for glucagon like peptide 1, a hormone the body already produces. This is an important starting point, because GLP-1 is not foreign to your physiology. It is part of your natural metabolic communication system.
GLP-1 plays a role in:
Blood sugar regulation and insulin signaling
Hunger and fullness cues
Gut brain communication
The pace of digestion
Metabolic coordination between organs
When GLP-1 signaling is functioning well, hunger cues tend to feel appropriate, energy is steadier, and blood sugar rises and falls in a more regulated way.
When signaling becomes impaired, often due to insulin resistance, chronic stress, inflammation, hormonal shifts, or poor sleep, the system loses efficiency. Hunger may feel louder, cravings intensify, and the body can feel metabolically stuck even when someone is doing many of the right things.
Why the Weight Loss Narrative Is Incomplete
GLP-1 medications were originally developed for type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease. Weight loss became part of the conversation later, and in many ways, it began to overshadow everything else.
When GLP-1 support is reduced to appetite suppression alone, we miss the broader picture, including:
Insulin resistance
Inflammatory signaling
Hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and andropause
Nervous system dysregulation
The metabolic impact of chronic stress
Weight is often a symptom, not the root cause. Supporting metabolic balance is not cheating. It is physiology.
When More Is Not Better
Part of the mixed reputation around GLP-1 medications comes from how aggressively they are often prescribed. High dose, once weekly injections can strongly suppress appetite, but they can also overwhelm the digestive system and create side effects that do not feel supportive or sustainable.
In integrative medicine, the goal is to help the body regulate, not react. When the body feels overwhelmed, it does not heal well. It moves into defense.
What Mindful Micro Dosing Means
Microdosing offers a different approach, and it is one I want more people to understand.
Rather than using a large weekly dose, microdosing involves very small amounts administered more frequently. The intention is not to overpower hunger or force rapid weight loss. The intention is to support metabolic communication gently, in a way that feels steadier, more tolerable, and more aligned with how the body naturally functions.
When approached thoughtfully, the goals often include:
Gradual improvement in insulin sensitivity
Reduction of inflammatory burden
Support of metabolic signaling without shutting the system down
Allowing appetite to normalize rather than disappear
This is not fast medicine. It is slow, supportive medicine, and for many people, that is what creates lasting change.
The Foundations Still Matter
GLP-1 support is not a replacement for the basics. It is not meant to compensate for chronic stress, poor sleep, inadequate protein intake, or lack of movement.
In my practice, GLP-1 microdosing is always paired with foundational support such as:
Adequate protein intake
Strength training and regular movement
Hydration and digestive support
Sleep and nervous system regulation
Hormone and thyroid optimization when needed
These foundations matter because the goal is not simply to change the number on the scale. The goal is to create metabolic stability that lasts.
I recently shared more on this topic during a podcast conversation focused on mindful micro dosing and a more supportive approach to GLP-1 care. In that episode, I explore how these medications work within the body and how using them with intention can support metabolic health without shame or extremes. If you prefer listening or would like to continue this conversation, you can find that discussion on my podcast.
A More Supportive Way Forward
Your body does not need to be shamed into change. It needs to be supported.
If you feel stuck, inflamed, exhausted, or like your metabolism is no longer responding the way it once did, there may be deeper signals worth exploring. The goal is not perfection. The goal is stability, resilience, and long term wellbeing.
Wishing you love, light, and continued healing,
